The village of Wilmette is a leader when it comes to online transparency of local governments in Illinois. It recently became the seventh local government in Illinois to score a perfect 100 percent on the Illinois Policy Institute’s 10-Point Transparency Checklist.

With nearly 7,000 local governments in Illinois, Wilmette’s score places the village in the top 0.1 percent for online transparency in the state.

By adopting the online transparency guidelines of the 10-Point Transparency Checklist, Wilmette is encouraging public participation in local government, preventively fighting public corruption and giving taxpayers the opportunity to see how their tax dollars are being spent.

Online transparency is an essential first step to ensuring good government on the local level.

Wilmette Assistant Village Manager Michael Braiman commented on the village’s transparency efforts:

“The Wilmette Village Board and management team are committed to providing the highest level of transparency to the community. Being recognized by the Illinois Policy Institute reinforces the fact that we are operating the professional, transparent organization our taxpayers deserve.”

The Illinois Policy Institute has recognized 68 Sunshine Award winners for excellence in local government online transparency throughout Illinois since 2010. As part of the Local Transparency Project, a local government needs an online transparency score above 80 percent to earn a Sunshine Award.
