Portillo’s in Peoria moved another step closer to reality at the Peoria City Council Tuesday night.
Council members approved Nov. 14 as the date for public hearings required before tax increases can be assessed in Special Service Areas. The area for the proposed Portillo’s, a Chicago-based chain known for hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches, is located on Sterling Avenue in front of Westlake Shopping Center. That area houses a now-closed Subway restaurant, an AmeriCash office and the UPS office at 4408 N. Rockwood Road. If approved, Portillo’s will assess an additional 1 percent sales tax, money needed to cover construction costs for the new dining facility, said 4th District Councilman Jim Montelongo.
