Communications associate

The Illinois Policy Institute is seeking an energetic communications professional to help the state’s strongest taxpayer advocate share research and stories with legacy media outlets. The communications associate will be responsible for helping with all aspects of Communications team strategy and tactics for the Illinois Policy Institute.

The position will craft pieces of content for public consumption including press releases, blog articles, feature stories and talking points for policy experts. They will also help with arranging media interviews, preparing experts, and coordinating events and podcasts.

An ideal candidate must be a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, have excellent writing and editing skills, be familiar with the media landscape, and be able to juggle multiple campaigns at the same time.

Position responsibilities and expectations

  • Media Relations
    • Manage media relationships – pitch stories and communicate with new and existing target outlets.
    • Handle inbound requests and arrange interviews.
    • Maintain contact lists and databases.
    • Prepare Institute experts ahead of interviews and speaking engagements.
  • Writing
    • Draft, edit and send press releases, statements, opinion pieces and commentary based on current events.
    • Produce weekly web content including blogs and profiles.
  • Outreach
    • Oversee the use of metrics and relay metrics updates to the rest of the communications team.
    • Craft materials to help internal stakeholders understand how efforts relate to the Institute’s mission.
    • Assist with coordinating event and public speaking opportunities.
    • Work with the Institute’s social media team to ensure regular promotion of content, research and experts.

Qualifications for role

  • Dedication to the Illinois Policy Institute’s mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two-year previous related work experience.
  • Passion for news and a solid understanding of the news cycle and how to effectively interact with reporters, editors and program directors.
  • Strong writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications media.
  • Proficient in AP style.
  • Able to exercise fast-paced decision making, judgment and problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of Chicago and Illinois media outlets.
  • Pro-active thinker, engaged team member and willing to learn quickly and on the go.


This position is full-time; salary and overall compensation is competitive.


This position is full-time and reports to our downtown Chicago office or Springfield office.
