President Obama invites House Democrats to a meeting at the White House to discuss the budget crisis. Is the government shutdown nearing its end?

The last government shutdown in 1995 was the result of conflicts between then-President Bill Clinton and the Republican Congress over funding. That shutdown lasted for a total of 21 days, from Nov. 14-19 and from Dec. 16 through Jan. 6, 1996.
