Professional regulations across the state need re-evaluation to ensure existing licensing rules genuinely protect public health and safety. As much as 24.7 percent of Illinois’ workforce requires some type of government license. Licensing affects a wide range of occupations that have different impacts on public health and safety.
House Bill 5213, filed Feb. 16 by state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, effectively deregulates the athletic trainer profession. The repeal of this act does not eliminate existing federal regulations. Instead, state-level deregulation allows national certification the final say on the scope of the industry’s practice.
Licensing requirements translate directly into fewer jobs and higher unemployment. Illinoisans want more plentiful job opportunities, and that can be accomplished by adopting less restrictive regulations. Reducing state government meddling, without comprising public heath and safety, would free up thousands of Illinoisans to pursue their chosen occupation.
