Illinois has a serious corruption problem. Illinois is ranked as the third-most corrupt state in the country. When it comes to fighting corruption, proactive online transparency is one of the greatest tools a local government agency can implement. It’s also an essential tool to educate and engage citizens to participate fully in the democratic process.
During Sunshine Week 2013 the Illinois Policy Institute wants to recognize the 38 agencies that have been awarded our Local Transparency Project Transparency Award for excellence in online transparency. To receive this award an agency must score an 80 percent or higher on our 10-Point Transparency Checklist.
Illinois has 6,968 local government agencies, more than any other state in the country. At the request of elected officials or administrators, we grade any local government agency in Illinois. Since 2010 we have graded more than 330 local government agencies in Illinois. The 38 agencies that have received our Transparency Award are in the top 12 percent of that population.
We applaud the following local government agencies in Illinois for their excellence and leadership in promoting online transparency. They are transparency leaders amongst their peers in the state of Illinois.
