Chuck Sweeney of the Rockford Register Star reports that FatWallet.com, a Rockford company employing 50 workers, has signed a lease to move its headquarters three miles north to Beloit, Wisconsin. The company was prompted to move when the General Assembly passed the Amazon Tax in early January. This isn’t a surprising move, other online retailers are exploring the same options, and as far back as January FatWallet.com said it would be forced to move if the Governor signed the Amazon bill into law.
When the Amazon tax passed, it was expected to bring in new revenues, and help Illinois fund its out of control spending. But, as more and more business flee the state the income generated will continue to fall. Government policies have a direct impact on businesses, and when the options are move a few miles across a border or lose 30-40% of your revenue, businesses like FatWallet.com will opt to move.
