Just a few hours before a new legislature was sworn in, on January 12, 2011, at 1:30AM Illinois’s 96th General Assembly passed the largest tax hike in state history, raising the individual income tax rate by 67 percent and the corporate tax rate by 46 percent. The vote passed by a razor thin margins in both the Illinois House (60 votes) and Senate (30 votes), the bare minimums for passage in both chambers.

Since the income tax hike went into effect Illinois’s economy has lost more jobs than any other State in the union.

In response to the tax hikes the Illinois Policy Institute created the Repeal the Tax Hike campaign. So farover 9,300 citizens have signed the petition to repeal the income tax hike.
