The busiest stations did not necessarily have the highest crime rates.
CTA and the Chicago Police Department increased police deployments on the system during 2026, including additional uniformed officers at stations and on trains.
Responsibility for regional transit oversight also changed Sept. 1, when the Northern Illinois Transit Authority replaced the Regional Transportation Authority. CTA continues operating its trains and buses, while NITA has expanded oversight responsibilities. Those new responsibilities include a focus on public safety.
A City Council committee this week voted to advance a proposal to sharply increase CTA safety funding and put up to 180 police officers a day on CTA trains and buses.
