The BGA's volunteer Citizen Watchdog Training is a free program that empowers citizens to keep an eye on their government and report about what's going on in their local communities.

Today, I will be a presenter at a government watchdog training session in an event hosted by the Better Government Association in Joliet. The Better Government Association does a lot of investigative reporting on corruption, fraud, abuses, and inefficiencies in government very similar to what the Institute does with our Last Honest Man project.

About the Program:
The BGA’s volunteer Citizen Watchdog Training is a free program that empowers citizens to keep an eye on their government and report about what’s going on in their local communities. You’ll learn how to examine government and make sure it’s operating in a way that’s honest, transparent and efficient.

Veteran journalists, investigators and legal professionals will lead sessions on:

— Understanding Government
— The Open Meetings Act
— The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

You’ll also hear from local watchdogs making a difference in their communities. This month, national award-winning watchdog, Brian Costin, tells his story of exposing waste and creating more transparency in Schaumburg. He’ll also share details of a Local Transparency Project and a 10-Point Transparency Checklist.
