Chicago mayoral candidate Gery Chico announced today he would take a 20% cut in pay and would force thousands of other city employees to do the same if elected mayor. He would also ask the city’s 50 Aldermen to take a pay cut as well and work to reduce the number of standing City Council Committees. There are currently 19.
We can’t begin to entertain talking with our employees if we won’t take the lead. You don’t have the moral ground to be asking anybody else to be doing anything when you won’t lead by example in cutting your own pay.
The mayor of Chicago currently receives a salary of $216,210. Chico’s proposal would reduce it to $172,968. While the state government faces a significant budget deficit, local and municipal governments are facing problems as well. The preliminary budget announced in July projected a $654 million budget shortfall for the city of Chicago.
