The Earle STEM Academy chess team is already the stuff of legend in Englewood, taking home local, state and national trophies.
Unfortunately, their coach and mentor, Joe Ocol, needs our help now more than ever.
He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, but is refusing to leave his students’ side for their two biggest chess tournaments of the year: the Illinois state championship and the nationals.
While he battles cancer and coaches the team, Joe is asking our community to once again step up and invest in a once-in-a-lifetime experience for his students to compete and to win – earning ratings that are crucial in gaining access to college scholarships.
For the state K-8 championships in Peoria from Feb. 21-24, Joe needs $1,800 to cover the hotel and food for 15 competitors. And for April’s national championships in Grapevine, Texas, Joe’s team needs $9,000 to cover the costs of 10 competitors.
Invest in the future of Illinois by giving generously to the Earle chess team today.
