Here are costs, test scores for Illinois school districts

Most property taxes go to local public schools. Illinoisans should know how well students read and perform math at school districts compared to the cost.

In Illinois, just over half of public school students could read at grade level and 39% were proficient in math on 2025 state assessments – after the state loosened the standards.

The cost for this sub-par result? An average of $20,129 per student statewide.

About two-thirds of that money came from property taxes. Illinoisans pay the nation’s highest rate, averaging $4,584 per home.

Use the table below to see how well students at your local school district performed on state assessments in 2025 compared to how much those districts spent to educate students.
