As the Illinois General Assembly heads back to Springfield for veto session next week, here is a quick look at what elected officials have signed on to the Illinois Policy Institute’s legislative efforts to prevent lawmakers from amending the state’s constitution to permit a progressive income tax hike, which would increase taxes on 85 percent of Illinoisans.
The Illinois Senate and House Republican caucuses have issued a statement publicly opposing the progressive tax. Additionally, one House Democrat, state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has signed on to our resolution. Accounting for each House Republican and Franks, the number of state lawmakers who publicly oppose the progressive tax is 48. That’s one more than the total necessary to prevent the passage of a constitutional amendment authorizing a progressive tax. In short, as it currently stands, the Institute’s resolution in the House would successfully prevent a progressive tax in Illinois.
