Illinois passes 11 new specialty license plate laws for 2014

If passing legislation concerning specialty license plates in Illinois was high on your wish list, 2013 was a very good year. Eleven new laws will go into effect on Jan. 1 concerning specialty license plates in Illinois.

  1. House Bill 0198 provides for the issuance of Illinois Police K-9 Memorial Plates. Proceeds benefit the Illinois Police K-9 Memorial Fund for the construction, operation and maintenance of a police K-9 memorial monument.
  2. House Bill 0167 provides for the issuance of Prince Hall Freemasonry license plates. Provides that portion of fees shall be deposited into the Master Mason Fund.
  3. House Bill 0989 provides for the issuance of Public Safety Diver special license plates. Proceeds benefit the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board for the purposes of providing training, standards, equipment and facilities to all public safety disciplines involved in public safety diving and water rescue services.
  4. House Bill 1238 creates H Foundation – Committed to a Cure for Cancer special license plates. Proceeds benefit the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University for scientific research related to cancer.
  5. House Bill 1529  provides for the issuance of retired law enforcement license plates. Proceeds benefit the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship and Training Fund.
  6. House Bill 1810 creates Legion of Merit Award license plate for residents of Illinois who have received the Legion of Merit Award.
  7. House Bill 1815 creates Diabetes Awareness license plates; proceeds go to the Diabetes Research Checkoff Fund.
  8. House Bill 1817 creates Illinois Police Benevolent and Protective Association license plates; proceeds are to be used for providing death benefits for the families of police officers killed in the line of duty, providing scholarships for undergraduate study to children and spouses of officers killed in the line of duty, and educating the public and police officers regarding policing and public safety.
  9. House Bill 2822 creates Alzheimer’s awareness license plates; proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s disease and Related Disorders Association for Alzheimer’s care, support, education and awareness programs.
  10. Senate Bill 1383 creates nurses license plates; proceeds go to the Illinois Nurses Foundation Fund to promote the health of the public by advancing the nursing profession in Illinois.
  11. Senate Bill 1439 creates American Red Cross license plates; proceeds go to the American Red Cross Fund

While 2013 could be considered the year of specialty license plates in Illinois, let us hope that 2014 brings Illinois opportunities to pass law that will address the state’s worst-in-the-nation credit rating, real pension reform and fight our state’s corruption problems.
