Oppose increasing the costs of broken Chicago police pensions

The Chicago police pension fund is in dire fiscal shape. Yet, some lawmakers actively seek to worsen the situation.

House Bill 4659, filed Feb. 7 by state Rep. Robert Martwick D-Chicago, seeks to add even more costs to police pensions without any guarantee the money will be available to pay retirees.

If passed, this bill would lower the age of when a Chicago police officer can retire, from 60 to 55 years of age. Simultaneously, the bill also expands the automatic annual retirement annuity increase from 1.5 percent to 3 percent, driving up costs even further.
