Gas taxes cost the average Illinois driver 29 cents a gallon more than before Gov. J.B. Pritzker doubled them in 2019 and built in automatic, annual rate hikes. Gas taxes cost drivers $127 a year more than before Pritzker demanded more.
And thanks to the way Illinois structures the gas taxes, drivers wind up paying taxes on the taxes.
