CHICAGO (October 23, 2015) – Chicago aldermen plan to vote Wednesday on a proposal to raise city property taxes by more than $588 million annually. Proponents of the tax increase – the largest in Chicago’s history – say that Chicagoans can stomach the massive increase because they get a “bargain” on their property tax bill compared to suburban homeowners. But at a press conference scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, the nonpartisan Illinois Policy Institute will dispel that myth, and show how Chicagoans already pay the highest per capita bill for taxes and fees in the state of Illinois. The new, comprehensive report from the Institute gives an honest view of how the proposed property tax increase would squeeze Chicago taxpayers further.
