Major Component of Illinois Policy Institute’s Economic Reform Agenda Awaits Governor’s Signature

SPRINGFIELD – The Sunshine Commission Act unanimously passed out of the Senate yesterday and is now waiting to be signed into law by Governor Quinn. In March, the House also passed the Sunshine Commission unanimously. A central feature of the Illinois Policy Institute’s Economic Reform Agenda, the Sunshine Commission’s ability to rid the state of wasteful spending and programs will be an important tool for government reform.

With state spending having risen 39 percent over the past decade, the Sunshine Commission will be an important first step in reining in spending and establishing better government accountability in Illinois. The Illinois Policy Institute would like to congratulate House Republican Leader Tom Cross, Representative David Reis, and Senator Matt Murphy on their hard work and leadership in ensuring this Act was passed. They look forward to Governor Quinn’s signature making this bill law and helping to create a better Illinois.

“The Sunshine Act is an excellent reform measure that for the first time will help all of us as citizens hold Illinois government accountable,” said John Tillman, CEO of the Illinois Policy Institute. “Our state is long overdue for real reforms that inject transparency and accountability into government.”

About the Sunshine Commission Act

The Sunshine Commission Act will create an independent commission of four legislators and four public members who will review the relevance, efficiency, and effectiveness of every state program and make recommendations to the General Assembly about consolidating or eliminating duplicative or inefficient state programs. The General Assembly will have sixty days from the Commission report’s filing to either approve or reject the Commission’s recommendations.
