Using our transparency website, IllinoisOpenGov.org, I found that in fiscal year 2009, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity gave International Coal Group, Inc. (ICG, Inc.) of Williamsville, IL $1,664,250 for grant number 09-483006. According to the DCEO’s Grant Tracker website, grant number 09-483006 was part of the Coal Competitiveness Program, which “encourages communities and businesses to improve the coal extraction, transportation and utilization systems within Illinois.” This specific grant was for the construction of a new production portal.
ICG, Inc. has “13 active mining complexes, of which 12 are located in Northern and Central Appalachia and one in Central Illinois.” Their website also states that they “control one billion tons of high-quality coal reserves” and that their “mining operations and reserves are strategically located to serve utility, metallurgical and industrial customers throughout the Eastern United States.”
