$27 Million to Collect Tolls

In 2008 toll collectors statewide were paid over $26 million dollars in wages.

Using our transparency website, IllinoisOpenGov.org, I found that in 2008, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority employed 592 toll collectors and paid them $26,661,059 in wages. Toll collectors received average annual wages of $45,036, and 190 toll collectors were paid over $50,000 in wages, with the highest paid toll collector receiving $78,185.

These toll collectors make up about 25% of the 1,995 employees on the Illinois State Highway Authority’s payroll in 2008.
