Illinois Economic Outlook Drops from 44th to 47th
Illinois falls further behind in the 2010 ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness review of the states.
The new 2010 ALEC-Laffer State Economic Competitiveness review of the states has just been released. It ranks the states based on their economic policies and examines which states took the right corrective actions (and which states took the wrong ones) in the wake of the economic crisis.
Surprise, surprise: Illinois has fallen in the results. We now rank 48th in economic performance (same as last year) and 47th in economic outlook (down from 44th place last year).
Looking at the 1998-2008 time frame, Illinois ranks:
- 38th in personal income per capita cumulative growth

- 48th in absolute domestic migration (cumulative)

- 48th in non-farm payroll employment cumulative growth

Policy changes lives, for better or worse. Illinois has pursued a path of government-interventionist public policy for three decades. Look where it has brought us.
It’s time to try something new.
By the way, author Jonathan Williams will be coming to Springfield for a lunch event on May 5. Details to follow.
