Great news from Springfield today:
The Sunshine Commission Act, introduced by Rep. David Reis and picked up by Senator Matt Murphy, has passed both houses. The Sunshine Commission, a central part of the Institute’s Economic Reform Agenda for Illinois, would make specific recommendations to consolidate or eliminate duplicative or ineffective state programs.
Specifically, the legislation’s language calls for the creation of a commission “consisting of 4 legislators and 4 public members, to conduct a thorough review of the relevance, efficiency, and effectiveness of each “State executive branch program,” and requires the Commission to report its recommendations to the General Assembly within 6 months after the Act’s effective date. Requires the General Assembly, by joint resolution, to approve or reject the report within 60 session days after the report is filed.”
If signed by Governor Quinn, the Sunshine Commission would be a step in the right direction for Illinois, helping to get rid of wasteful spending and programs and assisting in establishing responsible spending and accountable government in Illinois.
