The Institute’s Snow Squad gives the city of Chicago an A on main roads and an F on its response to side roads during today’s winter storm.
The city responded quickly to salt and plow main roads — the two streets we captured located within the loop were impeccably clear throughout the day. Every main road the Institute’s snow squad captured was clear and salted in the morning and afternoon check-ins. Response to side roads — as is expected seeing that the Department of Streets and Sanitation prioritizes main streets until the snow subsides — did not do as well. Of the five side roads captured, only two were salted by early afternoon, and though most were easily passable without plow, overall these roads were not easy to navigate during the day.
We captured the conditions of five arterial roads and five side streets — including two vital and three neighborhood streets — and factored the city’s performance on each into the final grade.
