Pritzker first Democrat to win 3 terms as Illinois governor
He handily defeated Republican Darren Bailey for the second time.
J.B. Pritzker is the first Democratic governor in Illinois history to win a third term.
Pritzker, who took office in January 2019, won reelection in 2022 and now four more years in Springfield.
In 37 states, term limits would have prevented Pritzker from running for a third term as governor.
Only two other Illinois governors have won at least three elections to the post: Republicans Richard J. Oglesby and Jim Thompson.
Oglesby was elected three times, serving from 1865 to 1869, for 10 days in 1873 and again from 1885 to 1889. Thompson won four elections and served from 1977 to 1991, making him Illinois’ longest-serving governor.
Pritzker is the first Illinois governor of either party to win three elections since Thompson won his final race in 1986. His next term is scheduled to run through January 2031.
Since 2016 Pritzker has put over $443 million of his personal wealth into JB for Governor, his campaign committee. Nearly half of that has gone to media and a notable $77.2 million transferred to committees such as the Democratic Party of Illinois and Democrats for the Illinois House.
