Chicago Teachers Union president fails to pay her bills… again
Despite Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates’ constant demands for “wealthy” taxpayers to pay their “fair share,” she is behind on her city water, sewer and trash bills once again. She makes $265,150 a year.
Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates wants the “wealthy” to pay their “fair share,” but despite her $265,150 income she just can’t seem to pay her home utility bills on time.
Davis Gates has let $1,006.95 in Chicago water, sewer and trash bills pile up, according to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Illinois Policy Institute on June 30.
She did the same thing last year.
Davis Gates’ past-due bills piled up for over three years and hit nearly $5,700 at one point, the institute discovered last year. The city invoked repeated delays in providing her billing information, and Davis Gates paid up just before the information was released to the institute.
Even though Davis Gates makes at least $265,150 for her roles as CTU president and Illinois Federation of Teachers executive vice president, her sporadic bill payments are not getting her any closer to paying the fair share she expects other “wealthy” taxpayers to pay. She allows other Chicagoans to carry her utility costs.
So how can Davis Gates get away with this? In July 2022, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting water shut-offs for non-payment. It followed a 2019 moratorium on residential shut-offs implemented by former Mayor Lori Lightfoot to “protect Chicago residents’ fundamental right to water access.”
It raises the question of whether Davis Gates is using an ordinance intended to benefit lower-income residents to cover her neglectful bill-paying habits. It also makes you wonder whether funding and putting CTU lobbyist Brandon Johnson in the mayor’s office creates a sense of entitlement.
Davis Gates’ irresponsibility and hypocrisy have been on full display during her tenure as CTU president. She appears oblivious to the controversy and turmoil she has created.
From urging violence on principals to failing to provide CTU annual financial audits to its members, taking an undeserved property tax break and much more, Davis Gates is CTU’s engine for scandal.
She is Exhibit A for why 60% of Chicago voters disapprove of CTU.
