Want to save Illinois taxpayers some green and earn a little bit of your own?

Instead of asking citizens to play the lottery, the State of Illinois is ready to give regular citizens big cash prizes if they come up with some fruitful ideas to save the state some bucks.

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services has created an award that ranges from $50 to $5000 for citizens that submit cost cutting suggestions for any state agency.

Each suggestion is assigned a reference number, presented to the board, and if appropriate, forwarded to relevant state agencies to determine if it is feasible, original, and cost-saving.

The amount of the award distributed is determined by the amount of money saved by the state. A suggestion saving between $1-$2,000 would be eligible for a $50 award, and saving $475,001 or more is eligible for the $5,000 award. Click here for the full scale.

While the Illinois Policy Institute and our staffers are not eligible for the prize, here are some ideas we’ve had over the years.

You get the idea!

These solutions do not have to solve every problem in the state. Any progress, big or small, is needed for the longevity of Illinois.

Get involved and be rewarded for your ideas! In addition to sending in your ideas to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, also send it our way at bcostin@illinoispolicy.org. We may include it in our 2011 Illinois Piglet Book.

Let the brainstorming begin!
