Ready for new Illinois taxes on plastic grocery bags, music downloads, and soda pop cans?

The Illinois Office of Management and Budget is floating a menu of “little” tax law changes that could cost you big: taken together, they could bring in anywhere from $361 million to $571 million a year. The Chamber has the list. Many of the revenue options are targeted at businesses, but some would directly affect consumers.

What’s under consideration (and how much it will cost you):

  • Impose a 5 cent tax on plastic grocery bags ($10-100 million);
  • Apply sales tax to the sale of downloaded music and videos ($5-10 million);
  • Enact bottle bill — 5 cent deposit ($65-80 million);
  • and more.

Are you taxed enough already?
