Illinoisans have heard the pitches about how affordable health insurance will be under the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ObamaCare.

On Sept. 24, Gov. Pat Quinn was trumpeting the ObamaCare health insurance exchange in Illinois. Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is at it.

Both have been cheering the least-expensive health insurance option on the ObamaCare health insurance exchanges in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, which are set to open for enrollment on Oct. 1. Strangely missing, however, is any detailed information on what health insurance will cost most people under the exchange.

According to the limited information that has been released for Illinois insurance rates under the exchange, a 27-year-old man living in Chicago would pay $125 per month for the lowest-cost “bronze” plan. The bronze plan refers the lowest level of coverage available on the ObamaCare health insurance exchange. If that individual had an income of $25,000 the cost would be $96 with a federal subsidy.

In the private market today, however, that same young man can already purchase similar coverage for just$77 per month.

The Illinois Department of Health and Human Services and Quinn’s office are peddling the exchange to the public, but are hiding the costs and plan details. Rather than promoting a product that they won’t let anyone see, they should reveal what the ObamaCare policies will cost, as well as the plan details. Good products sell themselves.
