Statement: Tollway Board approves Pritzker’s record toll hike despite public opposition
CHICAGO (Aug. 19, 2026) — The Illinois Tollway board voted unanimously to approve Illinois’ largest passenger toll hike in history, despite 76% of online comments solicited by the Tollway opposing the increases.
That’s about $225 in extra costs for a typical commuter, according to Illinois Policy Institute analysis.
The toll hike will take effect Jan. 1. Starting in 2029, tolls will automatically increase every two years based on inflation without another board vote.
The Tollway’s board members were appointed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who is also an ex officio member, and include the president-business manager of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 and the business manager of the Chicago & Vicinity Laborers’ District Council.
Bryce Hill, senior director of fiscal and economic analysis for the Illinois Policy Institute, issued the following statement:
“Gov. J.B. Pritzker has made affordability a central theme of his agenda, yet the Tollway board he appointed just approved a massive increase in the cost of commuting and doing business in Illinois.
“More than three-quarters of online public comments opposed the plan for a system already flush with cash to maintain roads, but their concerns were ignored. The Tollway’s approval of this record toll hike tells drivers that overwhelming public opposition is not worth as much as political allies.
“Illinoisans already face a heavy tax burden. State leaders should be looking for ways to lower everyday costs, not making it more expensive to get to work and move goods through Illinois.”
