Sitting astride the Fox River, the city of Geneva is home to a bustling downtown district in a state that’s notoriously tough on small businesses.

A high cost of doing business and little reason to hope for reform can be enough for Illinois’ small businesses to look elsewhere for success.

Cook and Lake counties had the greatest number of mass layoffs in April 2017, with most of the jobs lost coming from the service and hospitality sectors.

In exchange for more than $112 million in tax breaks, Amazon promised to expand its Illinois operations and hire 7,200 new employees in Aurora, Monee and Joliet.
