Illinois House failure to override Senate Bill 1905 a win for job seekers

Today the Illinois House of Representatives failed to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of Senate Bill 1905.

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (Nov. 7, 2017) — Today the Illinois House of Representatives failed to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of Senate Bill 1905, a bill that would have prohibited local governments from enacting their own Right-to-Work ordinances.

“Today’s vote is an initial victory for taxpayers and gives hope to job seekers. Local Right-to-Work ordinances are a big lure for employers,” said Mailee Smith, labor expert and staff attorney at the Illinois Policy Institute. “Illinois is surrounded by Right-to-Work states, with the exception of Missouri, and while all of these states are seeing jobs growth, here in Illinois people are struggling and the state continues to lose jobs.”

Senate Bill 1905 could be brought up again in the remaining two days of veto session.

Mailee Smith is available for interviews on why this outcome is a step in the right direction for Illinois
